why now can be rearranged
A list we write in the morning may still be in the same order in the afternoon. But the day rarely stays the same.
A reply arrives. Something we were waiting for is postponed. A task we thought was small needs more time. Starting another turns out to be easier than we expected.
The tasks on the list still matter. What has changed is which one we want to make room for first.
the order we write is not the final order
We write down a task when it comes to mind. Then we add another. In this way, the list also holds something of the order in which our thoughts arrive.
That order may be enough to begin with. But remembering something first does not mean we need to start with it.
In palilili, we can press and hold a task in Now and drag it to another place. The task stays the same; only its place among the other tasks changes. We do not need to choose a new category or give it a separate priority label.
Sometimes that is all the rearranging we need.
tones follow the order
The tones of the round indicators inside the cards in Now vary with their position in the list. When we move a card, its indicator’s tone adjusts to its new place.
Color is not a property a task carries permanently. It does not tell us how difficult it is, how many days it has been waiting, or how overdue it is. It is part of the current order.
This small difference can create a rhythm as we look at the list. Each card holds its own place, but they do not all sit alongside one another with the same visual weight. The order becomes visible not only in the arrangement of words, but also in the transitions between tones.
We still decide which task matters more. The colors do not make that decision for us.
rearranging can stay small too
Being able to move a task does not mean we need to keep rearranging the list.
We do not have to reconsider every task each morning or find the perfect order. Sometimes the existing arrangement is enough. Sometimes moving a single card makes the list clear again.
The order of Now is not a promise for the rest of the day. It is a temporary choice we make with the time, attention, and circumstances we have. When circumstances change, that choice can change too.
We move the card. The tones adjust to the new order. Then we can return to the task at hand.
The list does not have to stay where we imagined it at the start of the day.
